个人简介:
Will Wenmiao Shu is the Hay Professor in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Strathclyde (Glasgow). He obtained his PhD at the Engineering Department at University of Cambridge. Following his postdoctoral work at Cambridge University, he worked at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh's School of Engineering and Physical Sciences as a lecturer (2007-2012) and a Reader (2012-2016). His research interests cover a range of biomedical engineering topics including 3D biofabrication, biosensors, microsystems and their applications for regenerative medicine. He held a visiting position at Stanford University in 2011. He is an editorial board member for IOP Biofabrication Journal.
Abstract:
Biofabrication is an emerging field that encompasses a wide range of enabling technologies including 3D bioprinting, bioassembly and additive manufacturing for the applications in organ printing, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. One of the key challenges has been the development of 3D printable bioinks that are suitable for the fabrication of a range of tissue and organ types in the future. This talk will give a brief overview of the rapidly developing field of 3D biofabrication, with a focus on the bioinks. 3D bioprinting based on both scaffold based using biomaterials and scaffold-free approaches will be discussed. In particular, novel strategies are developed to print smart biomaterials based on alginate, collagen, DNA and other supramolecular hydrogels for human pluripotent stem cells, liver and heart tissues, and more recent work on the creation of bacteria 3D biofilms will be presented.
